At Odlar Yurdu University, under the supervision of Aytan Valiyeva, a lecturer of the Department of Biology and Ecology, students of groups 850 and 851 conducted a comparative study of soil acidity and alkalinity within the framework of the Soil Science course.
During the experiment, based on the chemical properties of the soil, various indicators such as red cabbage extract, tea, coffee, and soda solutions were used to observe the soil’s pH environment.
Red cabbage extract was applied as a natural indicator, and based on color changes, the soil was identified as acidic, alkaline, or neutral.
The results of the experiment showed that:
• A red or pink color indicates an acidic environment.
• A blue or green color indicates an alkaline environment.
• Tea and coffee solutions create a slightly acidic environment, causing corresponding color changes in the indicator.
• Tests conducted with soda solution demonstrated reactions typical of an alkaline environment.
This experiment enables students to practically learn the chemical properties of soil, comparatively assess pH levels using various indicators, and develop scientific observation skills. At the same time, it contributes to strengthening ecological knowledge and developing analytical thinking.
